Memory

The Long Hallway

Memory keeps a hallway open in me, doors on both sides, none of them locked. In one, my mother is still folding laundry into the shape of a whole afternoon. In another, snow. In another, a train. In another, no one, and the light still on. I walk it slowly. I do not tidy. I have learned that grief prefers a lived-in room.
