A Small Theory of Distance

Distance is not the space between us. It is the time a word takes to mean it. Your city is asleep inside my afternoon; I speak into the dark and wait for weather. Somewhere a satellite carries my ordinary news as if it were light, as if it were urgent. It is. It is. Come back, or don't — either way I'll keep the kettle warm.
